Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease affects the lungs by making it difficult to breath. Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

When the heart cannot pump enough to meet the body’s need for blood, this is known as Congestive Heart Failure. With blood unable to effectively travel throughout the body, some of the more common issues are tiredness and an inability to exercise. This can make it difficult for seniors to continue with their daily activities without assistance.

Symptoms of CHF include:

  • Insomnia and tiredness
  • Shortness of breath after or during exercise
  • Swelling in the feet and legs

Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction)

A heart attack is when blood no longer flows to the heart, leaving the body unable to function. Most heart attacks require some degree of hospitalization for treatment. Coming home from the hospital and readjusting to daily life can be difficult without trained assistance. Our home health care services will help you get onto the road to recovery after a heart attack.

Symptoms of heart attack include:

  • Chest pain
  • Discomfort in the shoulder, arm, back, neck, or jaw
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling faint or tired

NOTE: If you suspect a loved one is having a heart attack, get them to a hospital immediately!

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a lung condition in which fluid fills the air sacs (alveoli) and makes breathing difficult. This infection can be mild or severe, with some people developing “walking pneumonia” and able to perform their everyday activities. For many of the elderly, pneumonia can make life difficult.

Symptoms of pneumonia include:

  • Cough
  • Increased phlegm production
  • Fever
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Confusion
  • Chest pain

If someone with preexisting health conditions develops pneumonia, it may become fatal. Make sure to check with a doctor if you suspect a senior has this infection.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Sometimes known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS is a caused by the death of neurons within the brain. This leads to the inability to control voluntary muscles, causing issues with mobility and speech. Symptoms of the disease may begin to appear as early as age 50 or at any point after turning 60.

Symptoms of ALS include:

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Muscle twitching
  • Decrease in muscle mass
  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing

One of the most important indicators of ALS is “limb-onset”. This is when one arm or leg atrophies before the rest of the body.
