Oct 16, 2017 by Shannon Meller

Cancer. If you have ever heard this word, then it has likely scared you and made you shudder in fear. Fortunately, elder home care is a service that is offered to individual who do suffer from cancer to include breast cancer. Breast cancer is a struggle for many women, especially those who do not know that they have it. Once diagnosed, your loved one’s entire world will change and they may even change emotionally and physically. Two of the most common side effects that occur once an individual is diagnosed with breast cancer is a feeling of loneliness or anxiety and weight loss due to those feelings.

Not only will your loved one struggle with the diagnosis, but you will as well. It is a struggle for the entire family. With the proper elder home care services in place, your loved one will be well looked after and cared for. Since October is breast cancer awareness month, it is a good time to talk about early detection and treatment.

There are some signs of breast cancer that our elder home care team wants you to know because once equipped with the knowledge, you can then easily recognize the symptoms and seek out the care you need. Some of the signs include:

  • Scaliness, redness, or a thickening of the breast skin or nipple itself
  • Skin irritation or dimpling of the skin
  • Nipple discharge that is not breast milk
  • Swelling of part of the breast tissue or all of it
  • Nipple or breast pain
  • Nipple retraction or the nipple turning inwards

Cancer is not a word that anyone wants to hear, but it is one word that has afflicted many homes in the US. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Early detection of breast cancer can lead to early treatment, which means a better prognosis.

If you think your loved one may have breast cancer or you are worried and they are in need of a mammogram, speak with their elder home care team today. The team at Comfort Keepers in Milwaukee will transport your loved one to and from their checkups.
